Teddy Bears

This week you will be drawing Teddy Bears.

Look at the Bear below. What sorts of shapes do you see? What shape is the head, the body, the legs, the arms, the ears. How would you describe these shapes?

You will draw the bear using basic shapes. You will shade the bear using graphite pencil. You will shade the bear using coloured pencil. You will look at ‘Values’ light to dark.

You will look at some different ways of Shading. These ways of shading have different names. You will see how to shade a ‘sphere’ and a ‘cylinder’. This will help with the shading of your Teddy Bear to make it look 3D.

SHADING AND COLOURING TECHNIQUIES

When you open this PDF file you will see different ways to shade a ‘Teddy Bear’. We will talk about the different ways of shading and the different materials that have been used.

Then you will start practicing your own ‘Shading’. First we will look at shading a circle to make it look like a 3D shere and then an oval to make it look like a 3D cylinder. You will use this information when you start to shade your bear. I will be modelling (showing you an example) of how to do this.

You will need graphite pencils and coloured pencils for todays activity.

You may have some different types of graphite pencils….HB and 2B ( If you only have HB, that’s fine. You may have a ‘kneadable eraser’ or a paper stump. You can use these but your finger, a tissue or a cotton bud will be just fine.

Bear with pot.JPG

A photograph of one of my bears! What do you think my bear is doing? Can you think of a story?

Do you have a Teddy Bear at home? You could take photographs of your bear. Think about a story (Narrative) What is the bear doing? It’s like telling a still life story with objects.

Is your bear reading a book; sitting on top of a pile of books?; about to eat something from a bowl?, sitting amongst flowers?; about to eat a piece of cake? I am sure you could come up with some way better still life stories than that!! Use your imagination. You can use these photographs as references for your drawings or paintings or you can set it up and draw or paint straight from your still life set up. Have a go!

VIDEO

Below is a video you may want to look at later. You can follow how to draw this bear using a different technique using your graphite pencil and coloured pencils. We will talk about what this technique is when you look at some different ways of shading.

NEXT WEEK

Next week we will look at an picture of a bedroom….Your Bedroom. In your picture there will be a bed, bears and other toys. Think about the toys you have at home that could be included in a bedroom picture. I will have lots of ideas for you too!
